Fungal Nail Treatment & Nail Fenestration

Say Goodbye to Fungal Nails

Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) can cause nails to become discoloured, thickened, brittle, and difficult to manage. If left untreated, the infection may spread, leading to discomfort and persistent nail damage. At The Foot Company, we offer advanced solutions, including nail fenestration, to help you restore healthy nails.

What Causes Fungal Nail Infections?

Fungal nails are caused by fungal organisms (dermatophytes, yeasts, or molds) that thrive in warm, moist environments, penetrating damaged nails and and establishing under the nail plate . Common risk factors include:
Walking barefoot in public areas
Wearing tight or non-breathable footwear
Previous nail injuries
Weakened immune system or diabetes

Fungal Nail Treatment Options

1. Topical Antifungal Treatments

Medicated nail lacquers and creams help fight fungal infections, but they struggle to penetrate thickened nails.

2. Oral Antifungal Medication

Prescription tablets can effectively clear fungal infections from within but may have side effects and require monitoring.

3. Laser Therapy

A painless, non-invasive treatment that uses laser light to kill fungal infections without damaging surrounding tissue. NB Due to limited clinical evidence and the cost of treatment, we do not offer this treatment method at The Foot Company.

4. Nail Fenestration – The Advanced Solution

Nail fenestration is a minimally invasive procedure designed to make topical antifungal treatments more effective.

What Is Nail Fenestration?

Nail fenestration (micro-drilling) is a painless procedure in which tiny holes are carefully drilled into the infected nail using a specialized tool. This allows topical antifungal treatments to penetrate directly to the source of the infection, leading to faster and more effective results.

Benefits of Nail Fenestration:

Quick & Painless – Performed in minutes with no discomfort
Enhances Treatment Absorption – Allows antifungal solutions to reach the infection site
Non-Invasive Alternative – No need for oral medications with potential side effects
Targets Stubborn, Thickened Nails

What to Expect from the Treatment

1. Initial Consultation

  • A full assessment of your nails by a qualified podiatrist.

  • Issued with a home treatment pack for daily antifungal application.

2. Fenestration Treatments

🔹 Fenestration No.1 – Performed 7-10 days after the consultation (Included in the fee paid at the initial consultation).
🔹 Fenestration No.2 – (6 weeks after) – Includes further home treatment pack.
🔹 Fenestration No.3 – (6 weeks after) – Further treatment if needed.

Commitment to Home Care: Success is very dependant on the regular application of antifungal solutions and disinfection of footwear and hosiery, as advised by your podiatrist.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments depends on the severity of the infection. Most patients require 3-4 sessions, spaced 6 weeks apart, until the fungal infection clears.

Important Note:

Since nail growth is slow (up to 18 months for full regrowth), the nail may still appear damaged even after the infection is gone. A follow-up assessment is recommended to determine success.
