Ingrown Toenail Surgery

Our Nail Surgery service provides a permanent solution to painful and problematic toenails, such as ingrown or severely thickened nails, which can disrupt daily life and lead to ongoing discomfort. Carried out by a fully qualified HCPC-registered podiatrist, the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout.

Causes & Symptoms

Ingrown toenails and other problematic nail conditions can be caused by various factors, including improper nail trimming, trauma to the nail, tight or ill-fitting footwear, and genetic predisposition. Left untreated, these issues can worsen over time, leading to pain, inflammation, and sometimes infection.

Symptoms

Nail surgery may be necessary if you experience:

  • Persistent pain around the nail

  • Swelling, redness, or infection around the toenail

  • A toenail that grows into the surrounding skin

  • Thickened or deformed nails causing discomfort or difficulty walking

Treatment & Aftercare

The procedure begins with an initial consultation to assess the affected nail and discuss the best treatment option. Once we’ve determined nail surgery is the best approach, our podiatrist will schedule your nail surgery procedure and share with you all the information you require before the procedure. To carry out the procedure, our Podaiatrsits administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area fully. The problematic portion of the nail, or in some cases the entire nail, is then carefully removed to alleviate pain and prevent recurrence. The surgery is minimally invasive, and patients are usually able to resume most normal activities shortly after.

Following the procedure, our podiatrist will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, including:

  • Keeping the dressing clean and dry for a recommended period

  • Guidance on managing any mild discomfort post-surgery

  • Tips on gradual foot care as the area heals

You will also have follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and address any questions you may have. In most cases, the results are long-lasting, providing relief from recurring issues.
